The greatest stimulus for weapons development was and continues to be the military.  A firearm must have:

These issues deal mostly with the "action" of a weapon. This is the part of the firearm that loads, fires, and ejects the cartridge.  Firearms that can shoot multiple rounds are called "repeaters".  A truly automatic repetition of fire is found on a machine gun.
